Material Damage & Business Interruption

Our policy is designed for companies who wish to tailor their cover to suit their individual requirements.

Summary of Cover

Material Damage

Two types of cover are available:

  • Fire and perils, which provides cover for loss or damage caused by, fire (including lightning, explosion, aircraft and riot).
  • Additional cover can be added to provide protection from malicious persons, earthquake, subterranean fire, storm and flood, escape of water, impact (including own vehicles), sprinkler leakage, subsidence and theft. "All risks" which provides cover for accidental damage from any other cause (subject to certain exclusions) in addition to all of the events listed above.

In addition cover is provided for:

  • architects', surveyors' and legal fees
  • newly acquired items or alterations to existing items - for up to 10% of the sum insured (maximum £500,000)
  • removal of debris including boarding up
  • contents temporarily removed for cleaning or repair - up to 10% of the sum insured
  • additional costs incurred due to public authority requirements including undamaged portions
  • computer systems records - up to £10,000
  • temporary removal of documents or computer systems records - up to £1000
  • the contract price in the event of damage occurring to goods sold but not delivered
  • customers goods
  • the Insured's land - up to £25,000
  • loss of metered water - up to £10,000
  • trace and access - up to £10,000
  • replacement locks following theft of the keys - up to £500
  • landscape gardens - up to £10,000.

On an "all-risks" basis cover also includes:

  • accidental pollution or contamination of insured property - up to £25,000.

Business Interruption

Provides the company with financial compensation following an insured loss under the material damage cover. Cover is designed to help the business return to a normal trading position as quickly as possible. Cover is usually provided on the same basis as the cover for material damage. There is no compulsory excess for this cover.

Forms of cover

Various forms of cover are available and cover can be provided on the basis of:

  • gross profit
  • revenue
  • fees
  • rent receivable
  • increased cost of working.

Cover automatically includes increased cost of working where gross profit, revenue or fees are selected.

Cover automatically includes full payroll for gross profit and revenue.

With any of the above forms of cover (excluding increased cost of working) cover can be on a declaration linked basis in which case:

  • the indemnity limit will be 133% of the sum insured
  • average will not apply.

Extensions to the standard cover are available for example, loss following:

  • damage occurring at a customer's premises
  • damage occurring at a supplier's premises
  • compulsory closure following an outbreak of a notifiable disease
  • denial of access to the premises
  • failure of public utilities (i.e. gas, electric, water, telephone) including or excluding supply lines.

Material Damage Excess

Typically the first £250 of each claim arising from losses not caused by fire, aircraft, explosions, riot, third party impact, earthquake or subterranean fire is not covered (£1,000 for subsidence). If a higher limit is required this can be provided by a 'deductible' in return for a premium reduction.

  • Premium payments can be by instalments
  • We have qualified surveyors available to provide a range of risk management services
  • Sums insured are automatically index linked providing protection against inflation
  • Sums insured are automatically reinstated following a loss.
