Reported Incidents of Kidnap & Extortion

The following are a sample of incidents reported in the media during 2000:

  • Global: computer hackers have developed a virus that can be transmitted through unopened e-mails. This could increase significantly the severity of virus attacks by both hackers and extortionists. Losses could dwarf the estimated $6bn caused by the "Love Bug".
  • UK: threats made against food retailer; parcel bombs sent by extortionists.
  • UK: computer worker kidnapped by armed gang. Ransom demand made for safe release.
  • UK: retail manager and wife kidnapped and held by gang. Ransom paid.
  • UK: £2m kidnap plot foiled by alert passer-by.
  • Ireland: bank official and wife abducted by 3 masked men and held overnight. Ransom of I£25,000 paid.
  • Saudi Arabia: London bound passenger aircraft hijacked by armed gang.
  • Australia: extortionist contaminates pharmaceutical products; 2 people poisoned.
  • Germany: suspect extradited from Argentina to face charges in relation to a DM 30m (£10m) kidnap.
  • Argentina: British CEO wounded, but evades kidnap by driving through a road block erected on his route to work.
  • Russia: Norwegian businessman released after 48 hour kidnap ordeal.
  • Nigeria: armed militants in the Niger delta seize British oil workers.
  • Colombia: British horticulturists released after 9 months in captivity.
